What is Laser Therapy and How Does It Work? This innovative type of therapy uses low level lasers and light emitting diodes (LEDs) to create highly specific wavelengths of light (existing in the red and near infrared range) to create restorative and health-bettering effects. These benefits include, but are not necessarily limited to, reduced pain, improved circulation, reduction of swelling, and improved healing time. A laser will give off energy in the form of photons, which are then absorbed by skin and tissue cells and turned into biochemical energy. This energy triggers physiological responses and pushes cells towards normal, healthy functions.

What is the History of Laser Therapy? The use of lasers as a means of treating pain came into prominence in the 1970s, however the effects of red light on cell behavior was known since 1880. Laser therapy was only approved for pain treatment in the US as of 2002, but it had been used extensively in Europe for decades prior. The treatment has become increasingly popular as knowledge of it and its efficacy has spread

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are there any risks to treatment that I should know about? Thankfully, medical research has indicated that there are no serious risks or side effects that accompany laser or light treatment. The treatment has been used for over twenty years and almost no negative effects have been reported. In the event that a patient has an allergy to light, a rash may occur and last for a few days. It is also possible that old injuries may be enflamed for several days after treatment because the body is healing.

Is there any pain associated with treatment?

What does it feel like?

There is typically very little tactile sensation when undergoing treatment. The most that a person is likely to feel is a warm tingling.

Can laser therapy be used in addition to other treatments?

Yes. In almost all cases you should be able to supplement any treatment that you are undergoing with laser therapy.

How long does a treatment take to complete? Most treatments should only take 10-15 minutes depending on the size of the area that is being treated.

How many treatments will be needed? This will vary somewhat depending on the injury and the size of the effected area. Minor conditions could require between 1 and 6 treatments, while more serious issues may need 10 to 15. For severe conditions such as chronic arthritis, ongoing treatment may be needed.

How often should treatment occur? This will depend on the condition being treated and the associated area. Chronic conditions will often respond best to being treated between 2 and 3 times a week, going down to one treatment every other week when the issue has improved. Acute conditions can be treated daily if they are causing significant pain or discomfort.

How long does it take to feel the results? Depending on the person and the condition, effects may be felt after the first treatment. In many cases, it will take approximately 3 or 4 treatments before a noticeable improvement occurs. The effects of each treatment build upon the last.

Can you use laser or light therapy in addition to other treatments you may be undergoing?’ Yes. You should not experience any difficulties or complications. Call for your appointment today! 610.841.9300!
