Should Leaders Be Held to the Same Mandated Reporting Standards as Therapists for Self-Harm and Harm to Others?

Mandated reporting laws require therapists and other professionals to report when they suspect someone is at risk of self-harm or harming others. These laws exist to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent tragedies. But what about our leaders? Should they be held to the same standards when it comes to DECLARATIONS OF WAR? This question raises important issues about responsibility, accountability, and public safety.

Understanding Mandated Reporting for Therapists
Therapists, counselors, and certain healthcare professionals are legally required to report if they believe a client is at risk of hurting themselves or others. This duty is clear and well-defined:
Who must report: Licensed mental health professionals, teachers, social workers, and sometimes others depending on state laws.
What must be reported: Threats of suicide, self-harm behaviors, or credible threats of violence toward others.
Why it matters: Early intervention can save lives by connecting individuals to support and preventing harm.
Therapists receive training to recognize warning signs and understand their legal and ethical obligations. Their role is to protect clients and the public while maintaining trust and confidentiality as much as possible.
The Role of Leaders in Identifying Harm
Leaders—whether political, community, or organizational—hold significant influence over the people they serve. They often have access to information about individuals or groups that may pose risks. However, unlike therapists, leaders are not typically bound by mandated reporting laws related to mental health or violence.
Leaders do have responsibilities to:
Promote safety: Create environments where concerns about harm can be raised and addressed.
Respond to threats: Act decisively when credible threats emerge.
THE CHECKS AND BALANCES OF OUR SYSTEM ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP OUR POLITICIANS FROM GOING TO WAR CARELESSLY. But when the warning signs of needless war arise
mandated reporting for leaders could include training programs to help them recognize warning signs of limited imagination and guide them toward clear options for peaceful protocols. Reporting concerns to appropriate authorities could prevent harm, waste, human suffering, genocide and minimize fruitless and destructive wars.
WHAT IF PEACE WAS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY?
WHAT IF STARTING WARS WAS A SIGN OF MENTAL ILLNESS ?
WHAT IF FAILING TO NEGOTIATE WAS A SIGN OF DANGER- SELF HARM AND HARM TO OTHERS?
WHAT IF MILITARY SPENDING WAS A SIGN OF INSANITY?
WHAT IF PEACE AND COOPERATION WAS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY ON THE PLANET?
