LISA BAAS, L.Ac.
I came to this through ecology, not medicine.
I was studying environmental science, working on pollution and water quality alongside Barry Commoner, the Jacques Cousteau Society, and the New York Attorney General's Bureau of Environmental Protection. I thought hard about what we were doing to the world's systems and almost nothing about my own.
Then I got sick.
That turned the question inward. I changed how I ate, studied macrobiotics, then shiatsu, and shiatsu led me to acupuncture and Chinese medicine. I'm still working on the problem I started with: how a system stays healthy under stress. Just at a much smaller scale.

Where it started
I grew up on my parents' small farm in Berks County. My mother worked with herbs and hunted mushrooms; my father meditated. It was the back-to-the-land years and the whole community ran on that current. One of my first jobs was guiding tours at the Rodale Organic Experimental Farm, a few miles from Rodale Press — so holistic health wasn't a philosophy I adopted later. It was the air.
I travelled a long way studying different forms of healing before coming back to Pennsylvania to practise.
Start with the simplest thing that works. I've always put it as trying the butter knife before the chainsaw.
